Like I Needed Less Hair

If any of you want to try a fun project over the weekend that will leave you screaming in anger and frustration, I have a suggestion. Try installing Windows Server 2003 onto an unpartitioned fresh-out-of-the-box server with no CD-ROM drive, using only a USB Hard Drive and a lot of prayer.

I’m still waiting for the prayer part to kick in.

  1. dont botherGo your ass to Fry’s, buy a dirt cheap IDE CDROM and install that motherfucker the right way.Its not a 1u chasis, I hope.

  2. USB CD-ROMOr even a cheap USB CD-ROM. Why are you torturing yourself? (And why would you buy a server without a CD-ROM in the first place?)

  3. USB CD-ROMOk, so I was assuming said server is not more than a couple years old, in which case, USB is bootable. But did I mention, why would you buy a server without a CD-ROM in the first place?

  4. WTF?And it didn’t occur to you to scavenge one from another machine?AFAIK, if it’s unpartitioned it can’t be done. It’s not just about copying files across anyway.

  5. Boot DevicesI’ve seen newer mobos that allow for booting from USB devices. Not sure what kind of equipment you’re working on though.

  6. sexSince this is a Short version of the game, you get to 25 probably at the same time you have the chance to have 12 scoundrels, then the game is over. Maybe you would enjoy the full-game over on subpoenapower.com, but we warned. It is addictive and it takes 4-6 hours to serve all of the politicans! Save the Republic!!

  7. huh?wtf was that all about Kat?Anyhow, new mobo’s do indeed come with the ability to boot to USB, so i’m thinking the prayer part kicks in on having the USB drive autorun the Windows installation program like the install CD would. yes that would be difficult and cause me to cannibalize a CD-Rom for the 30-360 mins it would take to install 2k3.
