Anime: Perfect Blue
Right off the bat, I'm gonna tell you that I hated Perfect Blue. While a lot of you "otaku" think that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, you might want to listen to what I have to say. The film really tries hard to grasp at something brilliant, and unfortunately falls flat on it's face. Definitely not something for the passing anime fan, and I'm not sure if it's even for us hardcore anime fans, either. The film follows a ditzy teenage Japanese pop singer named Muri, who's career is slowly coming to an end. Her managers are desperately trying to steer her away from music and towards acting/modeling, which isn't exactly her cup of tea. The whole J-Pop thing was cheesy, as J-Pop is meant to be. Unfortunatley they translated the whole slew of songs into English, and therefore ruined any hope that Muri's love of her singing career could be taken seriously.
As Muri attempts to struggle through the world of acting, her former band-mates are living the sweet life without her. Of course, at this point you're wondering why Muri doesn't just fire her idiot managers on the spot. She's also the victim of a mangy, trenchcoat-clad dork of a stalker. Even though she sees this crazy fuck every single day, she never seems to report him to the police, her managers, or anyone else for that matter. But like I said, she's kind of a ditz and you never really feel too much for her character because of it.
Her mental sanity starts to wane under the pressure of her managers, threat of stalkers, and her complete distaste for her current profession. As she spirals down through the bowels of insanity, she starts hallucinating about the J-Pop version of herself, who berates her for choosing to leave the stage, and the fans who loved her so much. Nevertheless, Muri decides to press on with her acting career, despite floating apparitions, chiding from her managers, and a creepy stalker who runs an incredibly personal website about her.
The Hitchcockian shit really hits the fan once Mima has to do a horribly graphic simulated rape scene. She then poses nude for a magazine, and endures a few other career moves that just stab at her mental stability day by day. Do her managers notice the fact that their bread-n-butter is losing her grip? No. Do they offer to protect her even after a letter bomb is sent, which injures one of them in the process? No. Absolutely unbeleivable that a woman can sit and take all of this bullshit without once complaining. There's really no logic behind this movie, which is part of what hurts the brain so badly while watching it.
The ending is sub-par, filled with boring twists and a trite ending that will leave most people scratching their heads. While I applaud the director for trying to bring such techniques into an anime film, I'd also like to rap him repeatedly on the hand with a ruler for failing so miserably. Unfortunately, the so called "anime fans" eat this shit up, because it's such a break from the norm and because it tries such innovative techniques. Sadly, this one ends up being a complete waste of time. If you want a thriller, watch a live-action one, because obviously we won't be getting anything decent (anime-wise) over on this side of the globe for awhile.
Summed Up: Trite, cheap, and features some horrible voice acting. They even try to take an innovative leap with the animation and fall short. Only watch this one if you want to see for yourself how bad it really is. Otherwise, steer clear. The nudity and violence cannot come close to making up for this pile of garbage.
